Match the product before comparing currencies
An airport offer can look attractive when the number on the shelf is smaller than the price you remember from home. First check whether those numbers describe the same product. Travel sets, different bottle sizes, and regional electronics models can make two offers difficult to compare.
For fragrance, match the concentration as well as the name and volume. For skincare, check the formulation and pack count. For electronics, compare the complete model identifier and included accessories. A similar name is not enough.
Put both offers in one currency
Use a conversion rate relevant to your payment method and allow for any applicable payment fees. A price shown by a comparison tool can give you context; the amount charged by your payment provider is what determines your actual cost.
Suppose a fictional airport item costs €60 and your comparison uses an illustrative rate of $1.10 per euro. That is $66 before additional costs. If the identical item is available at home for $64 on comparable terms, the airport offer is already $2 more expensive. If it is $75 at home, the starting difference is $9 in the airport's favor.
Neither result is a live exchange rate or a current product offer. The point is to convert first, then compare. A small apparent saving can disappear when the costs differ.
Use unit prices for different pack sizes
When the same formulation comes in different sizes, divide the converted price by the volume. A fictional 100 mL bottle at $66 costs $0.66 per mL. A 75 mL bottle at $54 costs $0.72 per mL. The larger bottle is cheaper per mL but costs $12 more in total.
Choose based on how much you actually want, not just the lower unit price. A travel-exclusive set also deserves a check: assign value only to the items you would otherwise buy.
Check the practical cost of bringing it home
Consider luggage space, compatibility, warranty service, and how a return would work after your flight. Before purchasing, check current customs requirements with the destination's official customs authority and baggage rules with your airline. Rules depend on the route and goods, so a price comparison alone cannot settle those questions.
If you cannot establish the exact match or final cost before boarding, you can leave the purchase for later. Airport time pressure does not make an uncertain deal better.
